We hopped a train to Ollantaytambo in the morning, then grabbed a combi van
to Cuzco and arrived mid day new years eve.
The square was already starting to fill up with people as we hunted
around for a hostal for the night, and planned our departure for first thing in
the am for Puno. Below is yet another statue of Manco Inca!
About 6:00, and the square is filling up, the band starts playing on the
stage that has been set up, and hords are starting to flock to the streets!
It's so busy, we couldn't even find a place to eat!
They even sell beer in the streets! Individually, in 6 packs and 24! Crazy!
By about 9:00 you could barely walk through the square! It was like
Oktoberfest minus the German attire, and of course the music was all in
Spanish! Fire works were going off every
where around us, it was a zoo!! Not to mention we were getting hit with shrapnel - yeek! We wondered around for a while, but about 11:45 couldn't
handle the constant loud banging of fire crackers at every turn, so headed for
the hills - back up to where our first hostal was - with a great view out over
the square. From here, we could see everything, but were out of the insanity!
and thankfully so! at the strike of midnight, about a zillion fire works went off in the square and in all the hills surrounding - wow, what a sight!
Feliz Ano Nuevo mi amigos!
